A 40 amp transfer switch runs around $250, to back feed is a Federal Offense.
Even with a transfer switch you are required to notify your local power company, that's the law, also big fines can and will be handed down if caught with "do it yourself Elmo" installations. You can be held liable for MURDER should a lineman be killed by your illeagal installation or injuries from such installation.

I guess we're lucky. A couple years before we purchased our property the electrical service disconnect had to be replaced due to a lightning strike. Our electric utility will install a transfer switch as part of a new/required replacement service at no extra charge. So, our transfer switch is integral to the disconnect from the power line. A large percentage of their customer base is rural so it makes sense. The previous owner also talked the utility into installing 200 amp service.
NOTE: ...These receptacles are called 'motor base plates' and are avail at most RV-motor home parts stores and suppliers, as well as electric supply wholesalers. No need to wait for the mail man if you want one quick...
Thanks for the info!
...A simplistic adaptor can also be fabbed using the two male adaptors mentioned in another post...
I've never like the idea of doing this, too much margin for error. For now, I run extension cords to the essentials.
... Dumb Dutchman so you can't teach me anything, and, Hard Headed German so you can't tell me anything...
A few ice packs can help reduce swelling from impact injuries should you speak to the "War Department" that way. I'm 100% "Block Head" I know.

We have a 15,000 PTO driven generator. It can power a vacuum pump and tank compressor in the barn, tv's, fridge, and all the lights in the house, but the water heater was a little much for it while all that other stuff is on. That's alot o' juice!
