Give us a little more info. What engine/tranny do you have now? That will make a difference determining which Manual tranny you want. If you have a 302, you could use the M5OD which came with these half tons. Or wait... was the M5OD offered then?....
Or if you have a 351, you could find a smallblock ZF transmission. This tranny was only used in HD 250's and 350's. It's a very stout unit.
the truck is a 1990 f150 custom it has an automatic trans with over drive when my dad died the truck died and my aunt said she would sell it to me anyway my dad said the trans was slipping alittle and i i like manuel any way
To answer your question, it's a lot of work. If you have your heart set on it, it's best to buy a donor truck with a blown motor. The swap will end up costing you an arm and a leg with all the little parts you'll need. Master cylinder, slave cylinder, lines, pedal assembly, crossmember, flywheel, etc. Plus you'll probably want a new clutch kit installed regardless.
the swap would cost the same as rebuilding an e4od so go for it. I would only run a zf 5speed though. dont even bother with the m5od. you can locate the peddle hardware at a wrecking yard along with the tranny as well.
do a search for ZF swap on here and on the Web you will find plenty of info
IT all depends Kemical on what tranny he has. He could still have an AOD, which would be cheaper to rebuild than swapping the ZF. If he has an E4OD, then I'd say it'd be cheaper like Andy said to find a donor truck, and just swap engines. You can find late 80's models early 90's models f-250's and 350's with blown engines pretty easily. Just have to look around.
I like Andy's idea as far as finding a donor truck. That way you have twice as many parts should anything else go wrong.
