Strange Problems

My mother-in-law took her 92 Bronco down today to get it smogged at a Test Only station in No Cal. It's a 5.oL eng w/ auto. Everything seemed fine untill they noticed the CK ENG lite would not come on. She's not really sure if it's been coming on with the key, or not. Then driving home she noticed the ALT guage on the instrument panel seems to be not working - the needle is all the way to the left of the 8, and never moves, turning on the ignition or starting the eng. The alt is charging....14.5 v at batt with eng running, 12.7 off (new batt). She's sure this was working previously to going to the smog sta. Can these two problems be related? Since it's a TEST ONLY sta. I don't think they're trying to rip her off. Maybe something got disc during the test, or a fuse??

The check engine light could be the bulb. You are going to have to take the instrument cluster out to replace bulb, so while you are in there you can take all the bulbs out, and the large connector, and then take a pencil eraser and clean all the copper connections. This may fix the gauge problem.
