I just picked up my new radiator for old red ('79 F100 300-2). My radiator is rotting out and rather than have it re-cored I decided to go with an upgrade. I bought a 3 row that's got "extra cooling" as if I had AC or 4WD. Anyway, the new radiator is considerably larger than the one I have installed. The Rad. shop guy was concerned it it would fit (nice guy he was...). The core in the one I have now is completely open to the cutout in the radiator support, the new one will have a portion where the cutout is to small to expose the entire core (across). After doing some measurements, and figuring most of these old supports must have been the same...we found two holes a couple of inches out that look like they'll work just fine. Sorry for the long reading...those of you with engines > 300 is your core partially covered by the support? It appears someone at sometime installed an after market overflow canister. Is this thing really needed? I never see anything in it except some baked rusty mud. I won't be able to leave where it is with the new rad (extended towards the driver's side)...TIA for all the input, I hope anyone who endured this long post has a very grand Thanksgiving!! Cheers!!

The 6 cyl radiators usually have an extra panel next to them to cause all air flow to pass through the radiator. You should not have any problem removing that. The overflow tank is helpful if you can relocate it. It seems to me that there is room between the inner fender and where the rad support bolts to the drivers side of teh frame. Good luck.

Well, I got it in. The larger radiator fit right in. I had to relocate the new overflow container to the very edge of the support. Man, does this thing cool. Temps are cooler right now, but after idling for about fifteen minutes and then going for a rigorous test drive no leaks and the indicator didn't even go above the "normal" temp range. Makes me wonder if I should even bother with a fan upgrade to electric. 2.5 gallons of coolant... I wonder if a bigger engine's fan shroud will fit this new beast. It would be tough to get a larger radiator in there unless it's a four row. Just wish I replaced the timing cover gasket and oil slinger...oh well.
If you aren't running AC or ideling the engine a lot in the summer, you should be alright without a shroud. My 66s have never had one. Now when I build my project with the AC it will have one. :-)
