On my wife's 05 expedition, the tire pressure light seems overly sensitive. When I got the truck in July, I had no problems. When the weather got cooler in September / October, the light came on. I checked the pressure and it was at 30 PSI or slightly higher. I raised the pressure to 40 PSI and it was fine. Come November / December, the light came back on. I have not checked the pressure yet, but I'd say it is between 30 and 35 PSI. What is the trigger pressure for the sensor, and better yet, how does the sensor read the pressure (where is it)?
the sensor is inside the wheel. why would you put in 40 psi? thats a little extreme and can prove to be a fatal mistake. those tires take 34 cold rear and 32 cold front.
I put 40 PSI because the tire sidewall is rated at a max of 44 PSI. I'm no automotive engineer, and likely underestimate the importance of the door jamb mounted stickers showing tire pressure as well as the manual!
I went out to check the pressure and 2 oposing front / rear tires are at 33 PSI and the other 2 oposing tires are at 24 PSI! I must give more credit to the engineers and not ASSuME that "it must be a faulty sensor... tires look fine!"
Thanks for getting the thought process going in the correct direction!
44psi max is when inflated to 34 psi cold. tires expnad when hot and build about 10 extra psi. so you can keep 34 in them all the time (i do) but it will give a rougher ride. but these sytems have also been known to fail. so a trip to the dealer may be needed.
The sensors are supposedly designed to indicate low pressure after loss of two pounds of pressure. So theoretically if yo had sensors set at 34 lbs. the warning should come on at 32 lbs. You can have that kind of drop overnight. Mine would do that as it got colder until the tires warmed up. I took it to my dealer and had them recalibrate them to chime at 28 lbs. I don't think my sidewalls would blow at 28 lbs and I am entirely too **** about my tire pressure anyways.
