I experience a strange harmonic flutter in my wife's 05 expedition when my kids open A REAR WINDOW. When one rear window is open, the cab is not a pleasant place to be! If I open a front window, it goes away. Has this happened to others?
It's actually pretty common. My theory is that the pressure change happens so far into the truck that it creates an imbalance in the air pressure with no way to equalize. If you've ever been in a house near a tornado, you will hear the same whump-whump-whump. It simply can't equalize the pressure evenly. I've had my Ram do the same thing as well as my VW Golf. Remember, just my theory.
My '05 is the same way when I open the moonroof up. At speeds, it's not too bad, but around town driving, it's nerve-wracking. I think it's the wind dynamics going over or around the vehicle.
It also shuts up when the dog sticks his head out! (150# Rotti pretty much plugs the hole) Other than that, on the 98 X, and the 05EB its unbearable. It's like you have the checkered flag out the window!
This is not a characteristic of the Expedition, rather four door sized vehicles (cars or suv's) in general. I've never noticed the problem in a two door vehicle, odd because you'd think the same principle wold apply. I drive different rental cars all week every week (sadly that means I only see my Expedition on weekends), and get the same noise from any car when a passenger puts down his/her window without an other open to even the flow/pressure (or whatever the heck causes it).
There is an easy way to remedy it without having two windows fully opened. Next time it happens try balancing it with another window but only open it a small crack...say 1/2", it should go away just as if the second window were fully open. I do this all the time when a passenger "has" to have their window down. If I didn't that noise feels like its going right through your head.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one experiencing it... it squashed my fear that the truck was wrecked seriously before I got it. It only had 16K on it when we purchased, so who knows the prior history.
I had the same problem in my 04. Turned out to be the passenger side front door seal was not properly seated. As soon as the dealer tech seated the seal the noise went away.
