backfire problem

backfire problem
I have a 1983 Ranger 2.0L with a backfire on decel and shifting gears. Other people have said to replace the "gulp" valve. Did that , no luck. all vac lines appear in good order. also replaced the air diverter valve, still no luck getting rid of the backfire. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

okay the 2.0 is a inline 4 right? well things to check that can cause backfire. Sparkplugs(for cracks and wear), timming, bad wires, Carb needs adjustment, cracked cap or worn rotor, valves sticking, and crossed wires. so check all these starting with the easy ones and work your way through. Good luck. Also check the 2.0 forum they can probly be alot mor ehelp for your engine problems.

if you still cant find an answer pull the valve cover off and check the cam/lifters all should be snug-to-tight mine had a valve stick and i just replaced the head
