What controls cooling fan?

Hi, this is my first post and I was wondering if you could help me out. Been working on a '98 F150 with Triton 4.6L. Most likely problem, as I've learned form this forum, is the blend door. But I was wondering what sensor controls the clutch on the cooling fan (mounted on crank). On my crown vic, the fan kicks in and out when heater is used. Is this true for this model?? The books just don't tell how the system works. Thanks for reading my long winded question

Hello ollerub and Welcome to FTE. I would assume that your truck has the stock clutch fan set-up. I would bet the fan on your crown vic kicked on and off because the AC was cycling (it had a electric fan?). Your truck, the fan always is spinning but the intensity of it's pull is determined by the temperture of the oil in the clutch. So using your heater will have no effect on it. A clutch fan is designed to pull strongest when the engine is fully warmed up.

Thanks for the quick reply. I now understand. I was confused because I just replaced the plastic intake manifold on my crown vic. During the initial warm up after replacement I was watching the fan blade (mechanical, on the end of the water pump) and it stopped spinning when I turned on the heater in the car. I would have expected that from an electric fan, but it seemed unusual from a mechanical fan blade, especially since I couldn't see any type of electrical connection. Thanks again for your help
