have a 2001 F350 dually w/auto locking hubs.we had snow for the first time this year and when i put the truck in 4x4 it didnt engage,so i got out and manually locked my hubs.later when i unlocked them,i noticed that it felt like i was still in 4x4(felt it when turning)also noticed a quiet squeek every now and then.then on the way home heard a snapping noise comin from the hub cap only once in a while. one lock is real hardto turn now. can the locks just be bad or the whole hub? matt h
i had problems with my stock auto hubs, and ditched them for a nice set of Warn Premiums. they are alot better and stronger, and are really cheap, too $180 for a new set of hubs. you do have to get out and lock the hubs in/out, but i can do that, and i like to. i also capped off my vacuum lines while i was at it, no more leaks.
Take the hubs out.Disasemble them, lube them up and reinstall.I have done this and it works great. As for going with warn hubs, you cant as they do not make them for the duallys.I was in the same boat as you are in now.
did not see that it was a dually. yes, i agree with blueeyes, just take off the center cap of the wheel, pull the retaining ring, and wiggle the hub out. remove the retaining clip and the hubs should come apart. white lithium grease everything.
Not throwing wrenches at you, but...how often do you run your 4 wheel drive? A lot of guys never think about it until they need it. I have been running 4 x 4 for 25 years now and I consistently engage them about once a month. I have never had a serious problem yet.
thanks for all the insight guys! i dont use my 4x4 during the summer months and i probably should.i'll try taking them apart, and see what happens . matt h

My 01 dually is doing the same thing yours is, really hard to turn and will not engauge in auto lock. I have to manual lock them with plyers and broke the part you turn the hubs with. I was wondering if they sell just that piece??

I dont think that they sell parts for the hubs.I think u have to buy the whole hub.
I would try to clean them and lube them as already mentioned. I also agree that it is best to engage 4wd often in the summer months too. Not only do you know you hubs are working but you are also keeping your front diff parts lubed.
I usually lube the hubs once a year. I also make sure to drive 10 or 15 miles a month with the hubs in, that way the front axle and u-joints get lubed. My cousin leaves his locked in year round because hes constantly using 4x4 on the jobsite. Hasnt had a problem yet.
had melt down last night, snowed in ct auto locked them and they didnt engage, just started binding and squeelin wasnt good, unlocked them and the hubs kept bindin, the whole 20 mi ride home.not good, plus no traction in 3 inches of snow w/no weight in the back.did anybody tell you how bad a dually is in the snow w/no weight? couldnt move!!!!
