ive checked around at all the local performance shops and none of them carry aftermarket distributors for an inline 6. all i want is a good but cheap, fully adjustable(vacuume/mechanical advance) distributor. if i can get some part numbers i can get these guys to order it in.
Mallory makes two of them one is a dual point setup the other is electronic neither is cheap 299.95 for points and 549.95 for electronic. Duraspark distributors I believe also use centrifical advance on them so you should be able to change out the springs on them.
Ahhhhhh, but you Gentlemen have overlooked the Obvious.
Use your Original Distributor & Up-Grade it to Electronic by using Mallory's $80.00 Up-Grade Kit.
You can pull a duraspark distributor, module, coil, and all the wiring for about $50 at a you-pull-it type jumk yard. i just got one but I havent had time to put it in yet. I will put up a post when its done.
well, id like to take my old distributor apart but the bolts that hold the plastic caseing on to the shaft refused to come off and are now stripped beyond repair. this thing is a rusted piece of crap and id like to get rid of it if possible. i cant belive mallory is the only company that makes distributors for this engine.... where can i get this mallory ignition upgrade? and what exactly does it do to make my distributor more.... electronic? also, is it possible to stick an adjustable vacuume advance canister on to my old distributor?
As someone mentioned, a duraspark II distributor would give you what your after (vacuum and mechanical advance adjustment) and they are fairly inexpensive directly from the autoparts store. I think I paid $70 (remaned) for the last one I bought but its been a few years, others reported cheaper retail prices in their area. Your life would be easier if you pulled the wiring harness from a junkyard vehicle.
The coil and module cost roughly $20 a piece brand new...
If you wanna give it a little pep, you could get a mallory/msd/jacobs etc.. ignition box and coil, instead of the OE coil/module.
Believe it or not, a GM 4 pin module ($20 brand new), TFI coil (ford efi) and a duraspark II distributor, work very well, someone even tested this on a bench and found the GM module produced noticably hotter spark than the duraspark II module. I tried this as well, my cold starting improved 100%.
im thinking i might already have a durasparkII in my truck right now. if so, is it possible to adjust the vacuume advance with a hex key or something? when i tip the distributor back and forth i can hear something clicking around where the mechanical advance is, could this be something that broke off? or is there just something that freely moves around down there?

Good luck
Could you give us a little more detail on the GM four pin module? What years and models is appears on?

Sounds like a direct replacement is all you need. From what you say, you've got the core.
