Loud noisey engine

I think I am having the same problem as "gearheadz80" in a previous post. Yesterday I left work and was about 20 minutes into my ride home when the engine momentaryily sounded loud, almost like it would when first starting in cold temps without being plugged in. I stopped and shut it off and checked fliuds etc., everything looked ok. Refired and proceeded and all seemed ok. I made another stop about 15 minutes later for about a 1/2 hour and when I started again same thing. Sounded real loud and "clackety" if that makes any sence. It seemed to get worse the more load it was under. There was some smoke too under power, but I couldn't tell if it was coming from the tail pipe or not. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it home but did and parked it. Today I checked the radiator and it was a little low, maybe 3/4s of a gallon. I let it run for about 30 minutes and then drove it for 20 minutes and it drove perfectly. I think I may have a pin hole leak in tha radiator but. It ws also a quart low on oil but I don't think that was too abnormal. (The rad fuild and oil look good). Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a rebuilt Jasper motor with about 14K miles on it.

The clankey noise (worse case) could be a lifter or a valve starting to go bad. Keep an eye on the radiator fluid to see if it goes down. If it does check all hoses, radiator for leaks. Was the radiator fluid down 3/4 gal in the radiator or total radiator + reservoir? Maybe the heads was getting hot from lack of fluid to cool. Was your cab heater not putting out like it used to until you filled radiator?

I put the fliud in the radiator and filled to the top. The reservoir was empty. After I ran it for a while, I let it run while I washed it, when I checked it again the reservoir it was about 1/2 full?? I am pretty sure I have a slight leak in the radiator, but it is definately slow. Its over due to be replaced.

Yes it sounds like you was really low on fluid. Find a radiator shop and they can probably rebuild yours if you can wait for a couple of days.

The engine blew on this truck at 201,000 miles due to thin walls(another current thread) and yes it did have the additive in it. It was a pretty bad experience that has left me a little paronoid for new noises I guess. If all this is over a low radiator level I will be relieved. I will get the radiator fixed and see how it goes. Thanks Big, for your help.

Blue, another thing that you may want to look into is finding someone that can check and set the timing, if your timing is off the engine will run noticeably louder. Also, for cold starting, there is a timing andvance that works with the high idle. If there is a problem with that, your timing may be anvancing causing the noise.

I'm going to put a radiator in it this weekend and then put some miles on it. If it doesn't act up I will know that it was as simple as being a little low on fluid. If it does make noise like the other day I will check into the timing issue. I have noticed that the new engine always did sound a little louder(the characteristic desiel sounds) than the old engine. So that has me wondering about the timing deal.
