i gotta '78 ford f-250 ext cab. and i put a four barrel manifold on and a holley 600cfm carb. well it seems its not getting enough gas. i pump the gas peddle and then it kinda starts but won't stay running. turn the choke on and it will stay running for about 3 sec. i don't have all the time in the world so i won't be messing with it for a couple of day and i wanted to get your guys opinion on this deal. thanks
You can start by making sure your vacuum lines are all hooked up, your float level is correct, and your fuel/air mixture screws are properly adjusted. If you aren't familiar with Holleys I would pick up one of the many Holley books out there to help you with these procedures. Good luck, it should end up being something simple.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-01 AT 11:42 PM (EST)]All my Fords like when you keep on the gas for a little right after you get it fired, especially with my Hollys. My 78 needs the gas pumped and held halfway while your crankin then when you get it started you need to pump a little more then just keep it at a steady rev for a few seconds. And the motor only has 30k miles on it. Becomes a pretty involuntary thing after while. If not that, you may want to try checking your fuel filter first, and recheck your vacs everywhere. If none of this helps, im stumped also.
Hope this helps,
Mike

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-01 AT 00:12 AM (EST)]Funny, my ford has never needed hardly any pedal to start!
I love it!
And it only needs a slight bit when REAL cold.
Stock rebuilt motor 9000kms....stock rebuilt carb 40000kms.....why screw with (almost) perfection?

EDIT - LET US KNOW THE POWER/MILEAGE INCREASES ON YOUR MANIFOLD/CARB SETUP!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-01 AT 00:43 AM (EST)]Ahhh quit braggin...LoL. Maybe its just cuz I never tinkered with any carb other than the Autolites, im not yet a Holly tweaker. Im still stuck on them Autolitle hunks of metal. Why? Well im a simple minded person...No I just never found the time and money for anything else. I guess I shoudnt have said ALL my Fords. My 79 just about never needs any pedal, so I can brag a little bit too...
Do let us know how things go, I hate to see a Ford sitting. (Which isnt too often)
Mike

Check your distibutor make sure you got it in right and close to where it should be position. If you had the intake of you had the distributor out, so that would be my guess
Was the carb new? If not, it may need a rebuild or replacement. It could be your mixture screws, idle too low, float bowl levels, vacuum lines, or even a leaky intake gasket. What motor is it? Was it originally a 2 barrell motor? If it was, you have 2 barrell heads, and the carb might be too much. :-(
