Post carb spacer leak

My current '69 360 has the same problem that the 4 other '67-'69's I've owned had: the carb spacer doesn't match the mainfold! I guess the factory gasket worked for awhile, but not anymore. In the past I used JB Weld to fill the void in the back of the spacer (not the vac passages), then ground it flat. That worked good for awhile on this truck too but when I pulled it apart this time to rebuild everything the JB stuff had come loose and it was leaking again.
This is a California truck and the spacer is for PCV. I assume others have found a better way to fix this problem since every ford I've owned had the same setup and the same vac leak. Any suggestions?
Thanks

carb spacer leak

mblack,
If I'm not mistaken the spacer is made of a thick fibrous gasket. Is this right? These emmission spacers are still available. I don't like them and replace them with a Mr. Gasket phenolic spacer. They're plastic and in time they to will warp. I have found that if you over tighten your carb this just makes it worse. It not only warps the gasket, it warps the carb. Please do not over torque carb bolts. Its OK to glue the spacer down to the intake with silicone but, not the carb to the spacer. I've had this problem forever and the best way to fix it is to start with new parts. Sorry there is no other solution.
Have Fun, Good Luck,
KingFisher

carb spacer leak

KingFisher,
Actually this is metal, maybe alluminum or "potmetal", probably 1" thick, solid on top, with the fitting on the front that vents the crankcase to the venturis. The part that leaks is the 2 voids at the rear that aren't part of the vent passage but they overlap the manifold opening AND hang over the back of the manifold mating surface (if you understand my description). In the past I've tried replacements, that was 20 years or more ago and I can't remember if they were salvage or new but they weren't high enough to allow the throtle linkage to clear, again this spacer is about 1" thick.

carb spacer leak

The 289's had an aluminum spacer that only had the pcv port on it without that hollow overhang. All Ford 2100's had the same base so a spacer from a car would work.

carb spacer leak

If you're talking about the emissions spacer that has the EGR valve mounting boss on it, here's the deal:
standard on most trucks was the "potmetal" part made of recycled Carter carburetors or some such garbage, and the acids in exhaust gases quickly eat through the durn thing; I'm surprised there are any of the old ones left. Your first sign this has happened is a really crummy idle.
What you want is one of the cast iron ones used I think in passenger car applications. They are the same dimensions, made to fit the same carburetors, but they won't corrode away.

carb spacer leak

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-01 AT 01:13 PM (EST)]If you're talking about that thing that sticks out the back under tha carb with two bolts on it,I have one here for a 4V square bore.

I could always take a picture of it.

carb spacer leak

OK here's the new wrinkle, THIS spacer not only leaks on the back where it doesn't have enough contact area to make a seal, it leaks on the front where the vacum passage doesn't even hit the manifold.
I sketched this on the attachment so you all could see what I'm talking about (I hope).

In fact over the holiday I decided to rebuild the whole motor, make it a 390 and put on a small 4-V Carter, so for me it's a moot point.

Still I'm sure there are others out there with this problem. Like I said all 4 trucks of this era I've owned (all California 360's originally) have been the same. It was hard for me to to figure out that the parts didn't mate, even though I knew the leak was at the carb gasket.

Maybe someone could tell me if it's possible to fill in the voids with a welder?
Thanks for the input

carb spacer leak

I have a 360 in my 78 f100 (not original motor). You may look into ordering an after market non-egr intake. I bought a 4 bbl edelbrock performer 390 intake non-egr from summit racing. I used a holley 600cfm, vacuum secondary carb. This eliminated the egr crap, and gave me more horse power. Then just buy a regular metal carb spacer and your done!!
