A buddy has a 1995 F-150 4x4 with a fuel injected 351. He's had a problem with the truck missing, sputtering and losing power momentarily, then running fine. When it happens, the tach goes to zero, then back to reading. I'm thinking ignition, but I hate to get start throwing parts at it. It has 130,000 miles on it, and I think all the ignition parts are original. Any ideas?
Alternator? We used to have a Sunfire, and I had the alternator go bad on me one day. The CD player kept stopping and all the lights were flashing. Niether the spedo or the tach were functioning correctly. I doubt it's the problem, but since I know very little about the ignition, its just a guess, but at least you can get tested and it won't cost any money before you try buying parts.
Wheres fredric when you need him? Hes the electronics genious here...
ANYWAYS...
The tach dropping to 0 gives us an indication that something is going wrong with the ICM (I think....) which is the ignition control module. I THINK that it controls the tach and all that stuff. I've never had that problem with my truck, but it's something to think about.
When my ICM/coil went bad, it only acted up when the truck was warmed up. Over time, it would just die until the truck cooled off a bit. The replacement price for both was less than $100 and well worth the relief in frustration.
It sounds like ignition to me, but pull the codes and see what comes up. That's always a free place to start and could save some money by narrowing down the problem.
