I got a set of headers for my 400 for free. I dont know what brand they are but they are in decent shape. The thing is, the end of the header is 3" in diameter. I know a stock 400 doesn't need a dual 3 inch exhaust so my question is can I just have the exhaust neck down to like 2.25 or 2.5 inches after the headers? Also, besides being louder, does it hurt performance a lot if the headers leak where they meet the engine?
Yep, just buy some collector reducers with the size outlet you want and bolt them on. I don't know if leaking head flanges hurt performance but it sure would hurt your ears and be quite annoying.
Nick,
Neck those collectors down. 3" is a little large for street. 2-1/4" will save your bottom end torque and still give the top end you want. If your headers are leaking at the block then put two sets of gaskets on. Soak them in water before installing them and they seem to seal better. Periodically, you will have to check the bolts to insure they have not fallen out. This is another problem header owners endure but nobody seems to mention it. Get'em sealed up!
