2002 Explorer XLS Problems NEED HELP!!!!!
Hi! I'm just new to the board, Well irecently buy a 2002 Explorer XLS for my wife and these are the problems that i found:
**Airback light blinks and stay on
**Horn don't work (but sounds when lock the vehicle)
**Cruise control don't work
Well this 3 problems , I was reading the post and i think its cause a clockspring, i want to make sure if domeone have a experience to share going to be apreciate.
** Little noise in rear axle (everybody says that its a factory issue)
** the lights don't flash when i lock or unlock the vehicle
well i know is much work but any idea where i can start to looking for going to be apreciate, well thanks for the time and "Happy New Year"

I had a similar problem on a '94 Bronco. The problem was a broken wire in the steering column. Behind the steering wheel was a ribbon cable which was coiled to allow the steering wheel to turn. I guess it had turned too many times and the wires broke. I replaced the cable and everything was fine. This was some time ago. I can't remember exactly the procedure, but a Haynes service manual walked me through it. Something I do remember is many warnings about the air bag, since it is basically an explosive device. Be very careful working with the air bag.

I think that fixing the electrical connection between the steering wheel and column will solve all 3 steering wheel related problems; horn, airbag and cruise are all located on the wheel itself. It's unlikely that all 3 items will be bad at the same time.
I'll say again, be VERY careful when reconnecting this; you do NOT want that airbag going off on you when you're working right by the wheel.

hey man, I have the exact same problem..
My horn doesnt work, my air bag light is on, but my cruise control works fine.
guess, it should be an easy fix by the dealer since i have a 36k warranty on it started last month.

Clockspring or bad wiring harness, loose connector probably to blame (for the horn, etc.).. as far as the lights blinking when you unlock / lock the vehicle, that is how mine works... I don't think it's supposed to blink the lights. As far as the noise in the rear end, yeah, there was a design defect (I wonder how the hell the design got through testing!).. it will work fine, just makes that whiney noise somewhere around 50 to 60MPH sometimes. The newer rear ends (which will fit) are redesigned internally to eliminate the noise. I've gotten to the point where I either automatically stay away from the problem speeds, or I just tune it out.
