rear end change

Hello I was wonder would it be that hard to change out my ring and pinion on my 9 inch ford. I have been told by many it is really easy. I would appreciate any tips or info. Thanks

Going to a junkyard and changing the center assembly is very easy. Changing the ring and pinion gears only is not hard, but you need to know what you are doing.

Doing the used/junkyard swap involves pulling the wheels and sliding the axles out. Unbolting the center section, bolting the other one in, and putting the axles/wheels back on.

Changing the gears involves doing the above to get the center section out, but then tearing the gear assembly apart. Putting the gear assembly back together is where you need to know what you are doing or the rear could howl or whine. A handy person with a book shouldn't have a problem though.

There's a good tech article about rebuilding a 9". Check it out and see if you want to tackle it yourself.

Also be advised, if you go to the salvage yard,
know that the Ford 9" third member(center section)
is VERY HEAVY. So be prepared.
Either take a floor jack to help or strong muscles.
Have fun !!
