Hi, I have a rattling noise coming from the front end. In the morning about 20-30 seconds after starting, I hear a loose sounding/ rattle around the water pump, alternator,or fan, ect... I cannot pin point it. It seems the rattling is getting worse. Any process of elimination before the dreadfull trip to the mechanic? Thanks!
The Rangers had a problem with rattling, it usually was a loose timing chain or piston slap, most of the time it was piston slap and was caused by faulty pistons. Piston slap usually gets worse when the motor is warm and sometimes sound like the motor is a diesel or a bunch of paint cans being rattled. Alot of times the owners of Rangers would just live with it because it was almost considered normal and expensive to fix. One thing that seemed to work was the oil additive---Restore--- its not a thick oil, but many said it helped the problem almost instantly.
Forgot to mention that most people said the rattling was most noticable when idleing----slightly goes away when cruising and gets worse when accelerating.
I have a similar rattle when temperatures are low. It starts about 20-30 secs after startup. I believe it is the fan clutch engauging. You can hear the fan start to roar when the rattle starts. Once it's warmed up I dont hear it anymore.
If the sound is consistent, try to accompany it with Guitar. Hard to find a good percussion section now days.
Sorry, could not let that one pass. :-)
One trick to locating it, and be very careful doing it, take a piece of broom stick and hold it against the different components and then place the other end against your ear. You can usually pin point it right off doing this.
I've got the same problem, I bypassed the smog pump and NOTHING!! I'm afraid something is going to stop working anytime. I hear the sound soo clear when I put my ear close to the radiator on the outside by the grill. It's got to be something there. NO idea if it's wether a fan clutch, a bearing or the water pump. The rattle sound starts as soon as I start the truck, almost dissapears once I shift to Drive but is noticeable in Parking idle or Neutral. Is all this similar to yours?
It sounds exactly like my problem is. I will try to see if it goes away in drive and I'll let you know. It does sound like our problems are coming from the same area. Does your sound almost like someone shaking a very loud spray paint can? That's the best way for me to describe it. Something very loose. I'll let you know
take a old fuel line are any hose garden hose or even a long handle screw driver and put it to your ear then use the other end around areas ull find it that way alot easier just watch out the fan might bite ya.
