which computer for my 351??

hello all. i am putting a 351 engine from a f250 into my f150, unfortunatly i only had the frame, motor and transfer case. So I do not have the computer to install with it. I have found there are like 12 different possible computers from parts stores and i need a number from the cab which i do not have. i was wondering if anyone knows another way to find out which computer to use. I also was wondering if plugging in an after market module which replaces the chip in the computer would work. thanks

I'm going to assume that you had either a 302 v8 or a 300 six. The 302 computer will work ok, it may run a little lean, but that's all. What transmission are you using, and what year truck? If you have a manual transmission, a C6 (3 speed), or AOD (4 speed) auto then you will need a MANUAL transmission computer. If you have an AOD-E, or E40D, or 4R70/W then you will need the correct computer for that specific transmission. The only other things that will be in the computer will be compensation for gear ratios and tire size. But as they are all pretty close then you should be fine what whatever computer you get.

truck is an 89 with an aod transmission. i dont know what aod-e is. so i need a manual computer with an aod auto transmission? i have also heard that the 302 computer is not compatible with the 351 b/c of firing order differences.
thanks

Firing order doesn't matter, so you can use the 302 computer in a pinch. Ideally, you should look for a computer for a 351 and a C6 automatic, then if you can't find one of those, one from a 351 manual transmission can be used.
