Hello, i'm new to this forum. I just bought a 1979 150 with the 351 M 4x4 it runs great but has brake problems in the rear it had no rear brakes. i removed the driverside rear drum after some light banging the drum came loose. I found a lot a greese on the pads and the the drum. you can see the drum had been turned not long ago and it had 2 new pads there too!!, why the greese was there i don't know, I cleaned all that up and reassemebled all that, went to the other side expecting to find the same thing, and i cant get the drum off is there a trick that i'm missing? i have spent 2 hours banging on it for it not to move.
The grease is probably from a leaking axle seal. They are fairly easy to replace on
a 9".
As for the other side, try lubricating it. I like PB Blaster. Those old dums can be tough!
Also, on the back side of the backing plate there is (or should be) a rubber plug. Pull that out and use a slotted screwdriver to turn the starwheel adjuster. One way will spread the shoes out, the other way will retact them in. You want to pull the shoes in. This sometimes helps with stuck drums. Use plenty 'o brake fluid to clean up all the gunk inside, and lubricate the pivot points.
either it's stuck on really good, or the brake adjuster on the backside has to be turned. There should be a small hole(or rubber cover) that a brake tool, or screwdriver, can fit into and turn the sprocket looking wheel. this is your brake adjuster. Or if you don't mind replacing the brakes, then pound through the two little "nailheads" holding the shoes in place.
