Sound like worn shift rails or detents. Time for a overhaul. It will only get worse. Sometime a can or STP oil treatment mixed with gear oil will help it for a while.
A few years ago I replaced one in a 86 F150 for a friend. We found a nice one in a bone yard because we found that the shift rail parts were expensive and had to be ordered and it was cheaper to get a used one than try to rebuild old one. There are two verisons of 435 used in Ford trucks that year. The 2wd and 4wd models have different output on them so be advised if you look for one in a bone yard or buy a rebuilt one that there is a difference.

an easy way to tell the difference is look at the bolts holding the output housing on... if it's a square bolt pattern, then it's a 2WD... the 4WD had the 2 top bolts closer together... Ford used the 2WD transmission on some 4WD with the "divorced" or seperate transfer case, so just getting one off a 4WD doesn't mean you get a 4WD trannie...

It does if you get it out of a truck that is not a divorced setup.
