Hey out there, I have a 01 F350 crewcab 4x4 single rear wheels, with automatic. I pulled my 30ft fiver this weekend for a couple of hundred miles in 75 degree weather here in southeast Texas. I have a superchip tuner set at the mid level setting and was pulling at about 70 mph in overdrive. The fiver weighs in at about 9000lbs. When I got home was leaving a trail of tranny oil. But Trans is still working fine and quit leaking after cooled off. Did I hurt the trans? Don't have a gauge, but think I am about to order one and a Cooler today. Figure if it did it this weekend can only imagine after summer gets here. Also is 6.8 mpg about right for this kind of towing on flat ground, seemed a little low to me. Was also thinking of going to larger exhaust to see if it would keep temps down. Guess what I am saying is new to this pulling RVs and was surprised by alot of this.
Thanks
David
Mileage depends a lot on what you are towing. If your trailer is similar to mine, otherwise resembles a barn door, then yes that is fairly normal for that speed. If you drop to 60-65 when towing you'd probably pickup another mile or even two when towing the trailer. I avereged 12 mpg towing going to my parents house, 150 miles, had a tail wind of about 10 mph or so. Coming back it dropped to 10 mpg, against the wind, same 10 mph approx. Yes I would definately flush the fluid, get a tranny cooler and gauge. Also, if you haven't done so already, first, top off the tranny as it is probably low, then (only as a highly recommended product) go to blackclouddiesel, one of our sponsors, and get a Sonnax shift kit, 50.00 shipped to your door. It is the best money I have spent on my truck, you will be surprised to how much difference it makes. Tugger also makes a shift kit, I am sure it would do the same thing.
Well guess I was wrong about not hurting the tranny. After driving it yesterday, found that when I came to a stop at times it would act like the convertor was locking up causing the it to pull and the engine to go under load. Did it everytime I put it in reverse after it warmed up. Just occasionally in forward at a light. Going to service it today, new filter and all. But kind of looks like I am going to be putting a tranny in. Guess next time I pull the Fiver I will slow down.

Sounds like tranny a goner. Temp Guage, good rebuild kit and aux cooler will go far.
