My guees would be a 205 if the truck has part time 4X4. If it's a full time truck then it would have a 203 and I'm not sure if the 203 even came behind a 390.

I agree because when the 203 came out the 390 had been replaced by the 400 smog motor.

Actually the 203 came out around 74 or so.
Someone a couple post down has a 76 w/390 and 203.
If it has a 6" alluminum tail housing or a 4" range box, then it is a 203.
Also if the shift lever is
Lo Loc
Lo
N
Hi
Hi Loc then it's a 203.

205 shift patern:
4 Lo
N
2 Hi
4 Hi

It may have a 390 in it now but it did not come with it.

What do you mean it didn't come with a 390? Or do you mean the 203?

I stand corrected. I got my years confused, 76 was the last year of 390 in trucks.

Well jmono, glad to see you got everything straightened out.
and
The SnoMan, confusion understanded. 351M400s put into production in late 77-81.

Most 79s came with 351M or 400s, but it might of had a 300 I6 and they had a 390 on hand and just swapped it in.
Could be a number of things, but that one sounds good to me.

SnoMan, I can assure you I didn't mean anything bad about it.
I was just saying I get confused too, and I understand what happened.
Then I was just stating a little fact about the 351M400s.
jmono, wow, that just wasn't smart(cutting the frame). Hope it isn't a big section cut out.
