Hello. Does anyone know of a company/distributor that still sells NEW GT40P's. I see plenty of rebuilt ones for sale, but it's hard to tell which companys do quality work and which ones slap them together for a quick buck. I'm checking with my local ford dealer, but can only imagine what the cost is, if theyre still availible. Thanks.
A couple years ago I bought a set from the dealership that I work at.
Just tell the parts department that you're looking for a set of heads for a 1998ish Explorer 5L. If you tell them you want GT40P heads they probably won't know what to look for.
I think I'll have to go with finding a used set and having them redone. The few website links I've came across no longer exist and I haven't gotten any replies from the emails I've sent. Most of the boneyards around here will only sell you a complete engine. I'll keep digging, something will turn up. I'll make a few calls this weekend and see what I can find out. Thanks.
Try this link and review who sells the FPP parts. http://www.fordracingparts.com/wheretobuy/main.asp I am on the road right now, so I don't have access to a spreadsheet I made showing who in my locality sells FPP parts to send you with prices, etc. but you could do something like that as well.
Hunter, thanks for that website link, that was pretty useful. I called 2 Ford Racing dealers only to learn that they are no longer availible through them. However, I also made a call to my local Ford dealer who says they are still availible.........$1472.00 for a pair!!! I have a few car magazines from 2003 and 2004 where Ford Racing was selling them for $639.00 per pair assembled. I think I'll look for some reputable rebuilders and check there. Thanks again for the suggestions.
I've been considering the same.
Central Coast Mustang's web site showed them at ~$100/each (bare) and ~$640/pair (fully dressed). I have no experience with the company.
There's also a head shop in Florida that has had new castings (bare & dressed) and refurbs on eBay in the last month.
I haven't had any luck getting on the Central Coast Mustang website, I don't know if it's down or what's going on. I've been reading about them in forums and various articles, but can't get in contact with them. I've seen ones on ebay, but I think they use 1.90 intake valves vs. the factory 1.84.
Look on eBay for a user named indianacoreinc. He has always got some laying around his shop, and usually has a pair listed. Great guy to deal with and he stands behind his stuff. I got my enginge from him. His stuff will make a great candidate for an overhaul.
Just a word of caution, Kemichalburns mentioned that you will require special headers with Gt 40 heads. I understand that the sparkplugs are at a different angle & regular headers will fit, but it is impossible to put your plug wires on due to the plug angle. With regular GT 40 heads (96 Explorer) you won't have this problem. You may know this already, just a word of caution before spending big bucks on something that don't work. Bill.
I am actually eating lunch right now while buttoning up a GT-40P head install on a '94 Mustang GT.
Beware of Ebay heads, that's where these came from and turned out to have oversize valve guides and when putting the motor together we found that they've been milled. Luckily the P/V clearances were fine, but he's gonna end up with nearly 10:1 compression on an iron-headed street motor....
We used MAC headers which are supposed to fit w/GT-40p's. Well, BS. We got the plug wires on, yes. But, had to pull the pass. side header to get them on, then re-install the header, and we had to change to a 90 degree boot on #4.
As for a truck, I don't know of any headers that will bolt right up. I did trial fit a set of Hedman 89270 full-length headers. They would have been the same deal, you could make them fit, but you would have to put the wires on before the header, and probably put a dent in one primary also.
Get on www.corral.net and do a search for username FreakingStang, he has a link in his signature to a very complete and definitive webpage concerning the GT-40P head.
