Hey guys. How do ya identify a Dana rearend if there is no inspection tag on it? I have never seen one. I just acquired a 70' LTD 4dr for free. I know what an 8" and 9" looks like and this one is none of the above. It does not have a tag on it and I thought it might be a Dana.
Thanks,
Bill
Is your axle a full-floater design? It will about 8 bolts holding the axle shaft on to the hub if it is. On a full floater you can remove the axle shaft without taking the weight off the wheel. If you can do this, then there is a good chance you have a Dana 60 or 70. A Dana 44 rear axle is not a full floater, and has no strength advantage over the 9" which is not a full floater either.
Some of the big cars with small engines used a light duty rear end of the Salisbury (integral) type. That is, there's no drop-out chunk like a 9", but a rear cover like a D60.

I'm not sure they made the 8.8 in 1970, but maybe thats what it is.

During the mid and late 60's maybe even into the early 70's most of the BIG HP Mopar had a Semi-Floater Dana 60 rear end. Not sure that of the big boat Fords didn't also use it.

I wonder what the advantage of that would be? It can't be that much lighter than a full-float design. Easier to check the brakes?

Strenght, strenght, strenght
Same wheel bolt pattern as front,---onr spare to carry
Lighter, no 8 lug hubs
astesedic(sp) looks better. How would you like a set of the big ol 8 lug hubs sticking out of the rear wheel opening of your Hemi Cuda, Super Bird, or 440 6 pak Road Runner????
These alxes were also use in Dodge and jeep i/2 trucks.

Personally, I think they would look quite awesome. I would probably drive around without any hubcaps just to show them off!
