This is what is great about this site people helping people. I fortunatly have not had the problem with the fuse box and a leaky windsheild yet, but with the information we just got, and if drilling a few holes helps the water go on through helping the problem it looks like a no brainer to me. Just like fixing the odometer, couple of hours of work save $350.00. I look forward to your pictures and thanks for getting back to us here with what you found out.
This speaks volumes about Ford quality control. The real scary part is that Berggy could have had his windshield come flying out as a projectile in the event of an accident and he probably would never known the reason why. If I owned an Expy I'd be in the driveway right now trying to rock my windshield back and forth.
my 2005 lincoln navigator was stolen( before i bought it) and they took everything!!
i got a good deal on it but this is what they took,
1.DVD/Nav System
2. dual climate control
3. Passenger and driver side airbags
4. overhead dvd player
the worst part is they CUT everything out so i couldnt just buy replacement parts i had to buy the WHOLE DASH HARNESS, because i had no connectors.
My mechanic has just completed the harness install and my replacement Climate control is not working, also my dash is lit up like a christmas tree, as it was prior to the install. my question is, do you have any advice that i can give my mechanic? the lights that are on are
1.Charging system( He has told me that the charging system works fine)
2. Check engine ( nothing SEEMS wrong with the engine)
3. Air Bags.
he tried reseting the master computer,to no avail, are there modules in the dash that
may need to be reset/replaced? any help/ advice you or anyone can give me i will greatly appreciate, this truck is becoming a labor of love, i just want to get it working to its full potential
My SWAG would be that the Instrument Cluster module is not talking nice to the Powertrain Control Module. Perhaps the CAN (Controller Area Network is down or the various computers have not been initialized with compatible ID #s.
ill get the specific code from my mechanic, he says i NEED a navigation computer for everything to function properly, and the fact that the nav computer was taken could be why everything is not communicating, is this true?
Thanks everyone for this info. I also had this problem. While reseaching it I ran across this link that details this accurring in many vehicles. The NTSB should be held responsible for not taking action and requiring a recall. It appears to me that fires, injuries, and accidents have been caused by this problem. If the NTSB does not protect the consumer then get rid of it. If Ford does not fix the problem I'm sure some ambulance chaser will go after them.
If you have this problem or have had this problem I ask you to report it to the NTSB (link above has a link to the report site or call them at 888 327-4236.
Berggy, thanks a lot for this valuable info... I know it was a while back but I just experienced the issue today... We had a bad rain/wind storm last night here in NJ and it seems to have impacted my 97 expedition... My dash warning lights would come on and off and my blower stayed on when I took out the key. Also, my turn signals and high beams would work even while the car is off...
What exactly should I replace/remove? I will have my windshield resealed but I need to fix the electrical...
This thread was pretty helpful. However, after reading previous threads, Im curious to know if my situation could be starter, GEM, Fuse?
Ive recently have had problems with my dome and running board lights staying lit 50% of the time after the truck has been turned off. Doors are shut and my switches are turned off. In the past week, when experiencing the problem, Ive notice a few times that if I dont let my truck warm up, I'll have problems accelerating (I figure its electrical because the dash lights with also go in and out and I have no it runs very smooth otherwise). Ive also had problems with the truck turning over. Last night when I came back from a day trip fishing, the truck wouldnt start at all.
Jumper cables didnt help and cleaning the terminals either. We used a battery booster directly to the terminals and it finally turned over. We drove to an auto zone to have a second opinion.... sure enough it wouldnt start when we had the guy test it. He says its the starter, so foolishly we think otherwise and proceed to directly connect the booster to the terminals to start it up... this time it took 1/2 hour before we finally got it to start. I removed the positive terminal from the battery overnight and it started up this morning.
The reason im thinking it could be the starter is that their could be a dead spot (which would explain the hit or miss turning over) but im also thinking it could be electrical because of the lights staying on and the problem with the jumpers not working.

The dome/running board lights issue is probably one of the door switches getting stuck. If it happens when you're alone I would first suspect the driver's door switch. There are many threads here that address sticking door switches and freeing them up with WD-40.
The fading dash lights when cold is likely a sign that your alternator is on it's way out. A faulty alternator will also explain your low battery level and difficult starting issues.
I've also looked at threads that mention something about the starter solenoid or some sort of starting rods that are not making the connection. I guess bad starting rods could make it difficult in cold weather and by turning the ignition (without starting) will losen the rods.
