First question, Exhaust

Alright, here we go...

My '73 has a unique exhaust. There's two different mufflers hanging at odd angles with bailing wire right under the cab, and that's where it ends! The mufflers are mounted vertical instead of horizontal, so they hang down pretty close to the ground.

I will be replacing them at the end of this month with any luck. I want to get some kind of high-performance low restriction mufflers and have the pipes exit in front of the rear wheels on either side of the truck. Are there any problems with this set-up?

I have put Ravin mufflers from Midas on some of my import cars and have had great hp improvements. Can anyone recommend a brand for this application? (460 cid)

Thanks!

Cool! Thanks for the info. Always good to learn who makes what. I'll see if Flowmaster has a site. I bet they do.

First question, Exhaust

i have that exact set up on a 79 F-250 too. on a 351M, flowmaster 30 series will let of a real low and very powerful sound with 2.5 inch pipes, where u get a lot of sound tho is in the tips. 3 inch tips will give u an even more powerful tone. i've heard that 50 series flowmasters are the loudest, but dont nessicarily have the best sound, so u make the call. I'll try to scronge u up a picture

I just want power. If that means louder, so be it. But I don't want to be loud just for the sake of pi$$ing off the neighbors. Hey, I'm a respectable guy living the American dream, alright!

I like pictures!

First question, Exhaust

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Nov-01 AT 00:05 AM (EST)]all the flowmasters have all metal chamber construction so all of them are about the same HP wise, and they are all about the most HP u can get and still have mufflers, they sound great, not deafing loud but they will get peoples attention.I have heard i dont know if this is true but they say u get about 15-25 HP increase with flowmasters. i can try to get the pics by tommorow, i need to take some!

I put the Ravin 60 series on my 77 460 engine. not too loud, and like you've said, noticable increase in snort. I like them.

First question, Exhaust

I just installed a 70 series flowmaster on my truck. All the flowmaster mufflers flow the same, it is just how loud do you want it?
40 series is the loudest with 50 series next loudest. Then 30 and then 70 is the quietest. It was designed for an RV or motorhome. Still has a great sound out the back, but it's not loud or throaty. It is more expensive though at about $85 per muffler.

First question, Exhaust

I put 40 series Flowmaster mufflers on my truck. Nice and loud, especially with the standard transmission. I can turn heads almost anywhere. You can see a picture of the system at my website:

First question, Exhaust

Hey, Cowboy351 I have a ? for you. I just found out I can't get stock type Y-pipe any more,at least not here I live. I was wondering if were you able to buy pipes to fit your headers or were they custom made? I'm trying to decide what to do for exhaust. What I have is a bone stock 78 supercab 351M 2wd.
Thanks Jeff

I dont have a Y pipe, i just bought 25 feet of straight 2.5 in pipe. then took it down to my friends housw who had a pipe bender and ran duels out the whole way from the headers. Do you have 2 tanks? that would make the differance if u can run two pipes or not, i have 4x4 so i had to run it under the transfer case, but that was the only obsticle. If you dont feel like doing all the work, I heard that there are (at least around here) a lot of places that will run your exhaust for about 150 bucks, not including the mufflers. I'm still workin on pictures, i'll send u some when i can find someone with a scanner.
