My father is considering replacing his 2000 Focus soon (gee, I wonder why...) with another Focus. He likes the ZX5 best, but the salesman told him that it was only available in the SE and SES trim levels (with pw, pl, etc.). The Ford build your own site shows a ZX5 S level, with crank windows, etc. which he would prefer, but searching dealer inventories in the area turns up not one ZX5 S.
So, my question is do they actually make a ZX5 with crank windows, and if so, why are they so hard to find?
I had a customer a few months ago that wanted a stripped ZX5, and I found one in the entire country- in Maine, oddly enough. Auburn Motor Sales (in Auburn) shows they have one, and Clair F-L-M in Saco have two. But to answer your original question- yes they do make a base "S" ZX5, and they are hard to find. When the ZX5 first came out, they were sold in one trim level, loaded, and I think most dealers still just order them that way, out of habit.
It's my experience that most dealers keep cars that they believe the majority of "walk-ins" would want to buy. Cars that are moderately equipped - that is with many but not all - or none - of the options are most popular.
In addition to my trucks, I also have several Thunderbirds. In doing research, I came across what many here already know, that the two rarest varieties of a vehicle are usually -
A) the one that has absolutely EVERYTHING bar none, even the wierd, little known options
B) the one that has absolutely NOTHING, bare bones, nothing on the window sticker save for standard equipment.
I think that you could order a "S" level Focus, I intend to do that sometime soon myself, but I doubt you will find very many on dealer's lots.
I agree that the bare-bones cars tend to be hard to come by. It is interesting, though, how many S level sedans there are around, while the 5-door is so rare.
In Canada the only ZX5 you can get is the SES with what is called the Canadian Winter package plus including heated seats, mirrors, and all speed traction control.
