79 F250 460 4x4, I replaced ignition module box about 8 months ago more as a precaution, I just failed about two days ago. SO I put the one back on that was on it when I got the truck. It worked for 2 days. Put a brand new one on this morning and it fired right up. Is this a fluke that an 8 month old one took a crap then the used one to. Is there something that fries these things that I am missing????? Please help these things arent cheap.
I see you live in Arizona. Has it been unusually hot down there lately? Heat is what usually shortens the life of the module. And a 460 does put out a lot of heat. I have heard of some people mounting the module with stand-offs and longer bolts, to get some ariflow under the module as well.
Also, while the engine is running, take a voltmeter and put the - lead on the engine block, and the + lead on the + terminal of the coil, and see what voltage you get. It should be something less than 12 volts with the engine running.
It hasnt been hot lately, i have heard the same thing, one more question, does it matter what holes I use to mount the box? Right before it went bad I moved the box and used diffrent hole to mount it 2 of the 4, does this ground the box?
check your pickup coil in the distributer , check your plugs", Module and dist", and make sure they are not corroded, if its mounted on the same material 'fender'? should be ok, bob
I just replaced everything you mentioned within the past couple months, just went through all the wiring as well, I just hope this was a fluke that they died and this new one from Napa is going to hold up. If anyone else can think of a reason these things quit I would appreciate it,
THanks
OK did the coil test - on block + on + side of coil and got a reading of 9.
Is this about right? Is there any other test I need to do to make sure everything is good to go? Can you test the wires coming out of the module? What should they be?
