Merry Christmas everyone. Im self employed so I decided to take the day off. It does have its perks. So Birdhunter is work kind off slow today compared to other days. Hope the day goes well for you.
My father in law works in a local pulp mill. Christmas Eve, Christmas and Boxing day (Dec 26th for our American friends that dont know what that is) are all stat holidays in their contract. At double time plus call out and stat time and whatever else they get, each 12 hour shift is worth 48 hours at about $30 an hour!!!
I want a contract like that!
Needless to say it doesn't take much arm twisting to convince him to work.
And to top it off he was saying last night that one of the Cats he runs broke down so they have 2 operators taking turns working. He works for 3 hours then sits around watching TV for 3, works 3 more, watches TV for 3 and goes home.
The only calls I have had today are my 12 year old niece called me and my mom and dad called because I had called them earlier.
I'm working at Double Time and a half at about $25 an hour so there wasn't too much arm twisting here either. The guy who was scheduled for today has three year old twin boys, I was scheduled for the night my dad's side of the family gets together, which is A BUNCH OF FUN! So we switched, Mom's side of the family eats at 1:30 p.m. at mom and dad's and I get off at three so I'll miss the meal (I can stand to miss a few) and then I have to scoot out quick to my fiance's aunt's house ( a 1 1/2 hour drive) by 6 pm, so it'll be eat and scoot at Mom and dad's and then burn the carbon off the piston off the pistons to get to the next party!
Then almost the entire week off, I figure I worked Christmas day, let the others tear up the rest of the week!
Not me, the company i work for takes the whole week off (with pay), I think the way they explained it its like taking all the holidays throughout the year and putting it in one week. Or taking a vaction at the end of the year
More people than a lot of people realize. I''m retired now, but when I grew up I just kind of assumed most people worked 9 to 5 for 5 days. Little did I realize that one of my first adult jobs would be driving a semi. The main clue we had as to a holiday was the increase in traffic, the increase in the amateur drivers who figured lane usage and direction of travel was secondary to reading maps, calming the kids, etc. You could recognize most because they'd set a land speed record for x nuumber of miles, then make a pit stop and pass you again a few miles down the road.
But if you factor in the cop's, the nurse's, the fire fighter, the over the road drivers, the service station and convenience store employees - there has to be a sizeable percentage of people who work holidays. And most do it for zero overtime pay.
It was kind of neat this year, a local church recognized those workers and delivered donut's to those workers in our town.
I was lucky enough to take advantage of the best of both worlds this year. I worked yesterday and last night till 2am this morning so I was able to collect holiday pay and still get enough sleep to enjoy Christmas with my family.
