Engine Rebuild

I drove my 5.8 1993 bronco with a ton of blowby coming from the crankcase ventilation hose for a while, but after a 4 hour trip the other day the smoke got so bad i couldnt even see the cars that were behind me. It is obvious it is time for a rebuild so my question is what engine should i go with just wanting to get stock power? Also i was wondering if my after market basani headers will work with a new engine? Thanks

Hi, sounds like you had the same problem I did. There are a number of options you can go with. I had done extensive research in finding a reman. engine, and found that S&S Engines was the best company to go with for my needs. They market their reman. engines as HiPerformer series that are supposed to make equivalent HP and torque as the original engine if not more. They are well known and reputable. I know a few other people have gone with them too and been pleased. Price for my motor was about $1800 after shipping, and replacing the stock cam, lifters, springs... with a comp-cam extreme cam.

I also bought bassani headers that fit perfectly on the engine, a little tight with the spark plug boots though. Take a look at my gallery for pics of the S&S reman. long block.

If your looking to spend less than $1000, don't. You get what you pay for. There is also an option of rebuilding your current motor, but why pour $ into something you don't get a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty with?

have the motor built local. those warrantys have a lot of fine print that you must watch out for.

call some local machine shops, tell them you want a semi stock rebuild. a little head work and run a compcam 35-255-5 it will give great gains, not hurt the mpg and will run fine with your computer. your headers will still bolt up to any 5.8. This would be the way i would go.
well almost , im gonna get some more cubes out of mine when the time comes (408)hehe

id say build it urself. as long as u have a friend or two that know motors. or go to a book store and get a "howto rebuild small block ford" book it has all the lil tips and tricks to get the most out of the rebuild and make sure that it's a sound build. aslso talk to some local machine shops like kem said. there full of advice for the do it ur selfer. also stay away from napa's machine shops..they do know there **** aslong as ur willing to pay top dollar, which i found out when i had one head tanked, and fluxed for 250$!! i had the other head ( 3 cracked heads later ) done at another shop, they didnt charge me but 5 bucks for material for the cracked heads and only 75 for tank and flux..and they did just as good ofa job if not better

......and those are the three options. Build it yourself, pay someone to build it, or buy a pre-built one. Pros and cons to each, of course. Do lots of research - you're going to spend a good chunk of change no matter which way you go. Research, research, research.

I put a reman 300 in my F-150 and have had no problems with it yet - just turned over 6k miles.
