Thanks for your wisdom.
I wasn't implying the cost of fuel. I am referring to the cost for the timing chain, fuel pump, oil pump, that a fellow member advised I should have done on a 2009 5.4, 94000 miles that I was looking to purchase. So I been tinkering with the idea of making a purchase of a 6.8 v10.
I just need advice on the reliability of v10 models. I have found several different trucks.
2009 F250 4x4 crew cab v10 75000 on the clock.
1996 F250 4x2 crew cab 460 94000 on the clock.
1999 F250 4x2 super cab v10 55000 on the clock
My question is, considering the mileage on these trucks, and they are in sound, good running condition, are there any under lying condition that will lead to a future large repair.
I don't think that you have a crystal ball, to foretell the future. I'm just looking for info from those who have walked the walk
Thanks

personally i'd leave the 96 and 99 4x2's PARKED where they are, around me no one wants 4x2's save the bone yards , the 2009 is a 3 valve motor if it had been well cared for it has a lot of life left, just one worry i see every day since we do auto trans rebuilding is the trans ,what shape is it in how was it driven and cared for, as cost wise that's a up to 4 grand maybe more job

Given the options you have I'd go with the 09. The 3 valve v10s didn't really see the timing issues that the 3 valve 5.4s saw because it doesn't have variable valve timing. I absolutely love my 2 valve v10 and it has 289k on it and to my knowledge it still has the factory engine and transmission. If that 09 has been taken care of and you continue to take care of it it will serve you well. At 75k I can't imagine too many issues other than a bad coil or two I'd suggest you look at and smell the engine oil and transmission fluid. The fuel pump isn't horribly expensive but you have to either drop the tank or pull the bed

On the 5.4 yes timing chains and guides etc. The transmission behind a 5.4 ends up shifting a lot more often as well so keep up on services there too. With a 6.8, most of them still have the original chains etc. in them when they go on to the big parking lot in the sky, often at 300,000+ miles. Personally, I'd take a 6.8 any time over the same vehicle with a 5.4 . Yes, the 6.8 consumes a little more fuel, but break that down to operating cost per mile then add in the cost of timing chains etc. on a 5.4 over those miles and see where the total cost per mile ends up. I bet the 6.8 would come out better or even.

You can't fairly compare a 3V V10 to a 3V 5.4, as the V10 doesn't have VVT and all the related cam phaser hardware. The V10 is far more reliable. There is a spark plug problem that both share, but once the original plugs are changed, that issue is done. If any of the threads get stripped, there is a fix that doesn't require a head to be removed.

I miss my old 2005 and 2008 V10s. The 08 I kept until 106k miles. Never an issue with the engine. I always used Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 and never had to add any make up oil. The only thing that gave me an issue was the catalytic converters, which were replaced under a TSB.

I did quite a bit of towing with it, a 24' boat and car trailers. I don't tow much anymore. Even though, if a new V10 truck was available in 2015, when I bought my current truck, I'd have one today.

If I was in need of a new truck today, none of them impress me much. The 7.3 gasser does, but not the 10 speed auto behind it. Anyway, if I was looking for a truck, I'd look hard for a 2005-2010 V10 truck with super low miles. I still see them from time to time. The 3V V10 with the Torqshift was a great combination, especially with 4.30 gears, like my last one had.

Good afternoon cdhendrix, I hope this note finds you and your family well.
When the weather is better you will get it clean.
It is still a beauty!! Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm still on the hunt for a truck. Looked at one this morning. It wasn't too bad really.
The title was a salvage title, because it had hail damage, the owners insurance totaled it.
My insurance won't cover salvaged vehicles. Going to keep on keeping on the hunt.
God's blessings

Well hell, caught my attention. Lurk a lot but hardly ever post any more since I traded away My King Ranch long bed F350 V10. Probably the best Ford I ever owned. The Lincoln MKC replacment was a piece of crap. Today I am waiting on FoMoCo to build me a new 2024 Maverick truck to replace my low milage 2022 version (wife gets the *** when she asks me why a new truck when mino only had 4300 miles on it and answers is because it is dirty!)

Sadly in 08 Obama caused fuel to get over $4 and the V10 was killing me commuting. And as we aged I sold the travel trailer and did not need the beast any more. A few months back guy parked next to me with my old truck (still had decals I had applied) As I exited the barber shop he was getting ready to go in. I mention that I was original owner and we chatted for a bit. 18 years old, starts and runs fine, has 203,900 mils on the clock. Back when I neared 90K I replaced the plugs and used anitseize, he thanked me! I asked if he was aware it had 4:30 rear end, he did not but laughed becaus in his words the damned this is a stump puller. He uses it to transport giant round bales on a 33 foot trailer

Wish my old feeble brain could remember all the V10 forum guys, we sure did have a lot of posts with some great information and advice. Being tagged today brought a smile to my fact, thanks!
