Does anyone remember the Ford Courier?

I was pondering buying a mid 80's Ranger 4x4 and fixing it up for my daily driver, and that got me thinking of my first truck..a 1981 Courier. It had more room than a Ranger (i'm big and a ranger is a tight fit), but still got decent gas milege (with a 2.3L, factory 2bbl. and an auto). My question is did Ford ever make a four-wheel drive Courier? I think that would be a cool truck to have. They were made in the mid 70's to 1982 so it would most likely have a straight axle. Ch#%@ made a 4x4 Luv *shudder*, wouldn't Ford have made a competitor? The little trucks were were tough as nails, I mean i tried to tear it up, but I couldn't. Finally the frame rusted through(it was origionally from Jacksonville), and we got rid of it. I miss it, and now I want another one.

Jon, yes Ford did make a 4x4 Courier, and they were pretty tough little trucks. The problem is, they rusted away in no time! I know where one sits, but its JUNK! I havent seen one actually going down the road in probably 10 years.

Nate, I don't think Ford made the Courier at all, it was a Masda, and in my opinion a real pile of junk. You cant find one that the seat isn't all to pieces. I don't recall ever seeing a 4X4, but you may have.

Jon look at a full size with a 302, you can get decent milage and will have the room that you require.

I have never seen a 4x Courier but if the y made a Mazda 4x then they probably did.My girlfriends dad has one that has 300k on it.THe head is the only thing that has been re-built on the motor. He bought the truck new in76.It is about ready to go though. The door jams are rotted bad and i aint for sure how to fix them cause the truck is real thin and rusty.
He has gotten 24 years out of it but they are thowaway trucks just the same.
BTW,
I kinda liked the looks of the ol round headlight Couriers.Wouldmake a cool tube frame 1/4mile beast!

Yeah, I remember the Courier (Mazda) and the Ch**y Luv (Isuzu?)and the Dodge D-50 (Mitsubishi). All the big three broke into the mini-truck market buy nameplating Japaneese trucks.

I had a 72 and an 81. I never had to do anything to them but change the clutches a couple times each.
I remember people putting Jeep CJ axles under them but I don't know what they used for transmissions and transfer cases.

Four wheel drive Ford Couriers
The Ford Courier was never available as an OEM 4 wheel drive version in the US (the Mazda B-series didn’t get 4 wheel drive until 1986). However, there were several companies doing 4x4 conversions of the Ford Courier by adding a transfer case and solid front axle beginning in 1975 . From 1975 to 1979 Northwest ATV in Kelso Washington converted about 1500 Couriers to 4WD, which where sold as the Ford Courier Sasquatch, in the WA, OR, CA, and ID markets only. (Ford Sasquatch brochure). Other conversions of early 80's Couriers were done by other companies as well.

There were several companies here in LA LA Land that would add dual rear wheels, utility, flat or stake beds, or even the creation you see here.

Many FoMoCo Dealers used Courier stake beds to pick up and deliver parts. Stake beds were common back then, but are rarely seen today.
From another thread, ND always has good input.

Brazil still has 'em. Mystery truck photo after the Brazilian...
