I have a 1979 F-150 that got a serious case of cancer in the frame. THe problem started out as a simple hole in the channel, but proceeded to crack. IT's not completely cracked through yet, but it's getting close. I took it to the local redneck hobbler and he said he couldn't plate it because the crack is between the two leaf spring shackles rights above the back tire. Everything from the hole back is rotton bad so plating isn't goin to work. Has anyone ever had this happen. Would it be safe to just cut the one frame rail behind the cab and weld a new one in. what else would work. puting a new frame rail in is probably my last resort. I only need to get another 6 months out of this truck. I don't know what to do, the truck runs great and gets decent gas milage for a 4 wheel drive. Second, it's getting harder to find trucks with standard trannys in them anymore.
Might be time to go to a salvage yard look for a frame. I am thinking a swap. If you do a frame weld it would have to be perfectly square. I have a feeling that if one part of the frame is bad what condition is the rest of the frame?
Wow, where do you live, Bodo?
My '78's body rusted away to nothing, but the frame is still solid as can be; with all the 'new' western Canada road salt, I would have thought the frame would go too, but every frame I have seen at the junkyard is solid, too...
You got some BAD salt there, dude!
Yeah, I think a frame swap is in order, especially if the cab and box are in good shape. If they are not, a truck swap would be simpler.
