With the extra effort of building a exhaust system go with a X vs H pipe as it will flow better. There're photos way back in the exhaust forum on a home built system I fabricated, Greg (gtex) posted 'em for me.

A 2 1/2" X by "DrGas" is $94 (I have one new collecting dust for $50), a H pipe is material plus labor for holes and welding but then it's a H pipe. X is harder to make and install which would be just behind the trans after the U joint, a room thing. I built a system with mandrel tube, 2 1/2", 3" to 4 1/4" tips, in all 34 pieces. This took 3 weeks in the winter (bad thing) to build but then it was a first project for the 251 Mig welder. A cold saw would be great, I used a chop saw. If you have the equipment by all means go and build it yourself you'll save money, build it your way not what they want which is fast and dirty for the buck. Far as cost, my local "hangout" muffler shop wouldn't of done what I made for less than $2K but then again I wouldn't have their crap on my truck. From the headers to the X is ceramic coated inside and out, I have app $900 including mufflers ($86 each) in a exhaust system.
Hey, Happy Holidays. .....=o&o>.....
