I had my '74 F-100 out today and went to drop something of to my wife. Figured it was going to be a real quick stop so I parked in front of the doors.
Came back out and turned the key and nothing. Went to jiggle the gear selector to make sure it was fully set into Park and it moves freely from Park to Low.
I couldnt afford to have it towed so I said my prayers and crawled under it and pushed the shift linkage up into park got into it and started it set the parking brake as really good and crawled back under it and dropped it through reverse to drive while praying that E-Brake holds and doesnt run me over.
So does anyone have any experience with what may cause this? I assume I have to disassemble the column but just was looking for some info as to what to look for.
Steve,I recently had the same thing happen on my 73 F-350 SCS,the inside of the collar came apart on mine so I had to order a new one.It is a job to replace the collar and be careful you don't break off the neutral safety switch tab on the inner shift tube.I usually replace the turn signal mechanisim as it's life span is about the same as a shift collars in my experiance. You will need a steering wheel puller.Take your time when reinstalling, rotating the assembly left and right while pushing down into place has worked for me,also a second pair of hands is a help at times.Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it together correctly and don't force it or you will break something you don't want to.Hope this helps.

Here's what you need to replace.
It's the shift collar. Go ahead and repalce the shift arm grommet while you're at it.
Pull the steering wheel, remove the wiring harness, remove the broken shift collar, watch out for breaking the tab for the neutral safety switch on the shift tube, run the wiring throught the new collar, feed the wire back through the column, align and mount the new shift collar, wheel, etc. Check for proper shifting and safety switch operation.
That's the Reader's Digest condensed version. I've done this a few times and they have never been fun BUT some have gone much better than others. Good luck.

I had the same problem about a week ago, here is a good link that covers everything pretty well, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...6&goto=newpost
Like said above you will need a new shift collar, mostlikly the center circle broke and there is nothing to catch to change gears now. Since all you had to do was put the tranny phisically in gear at the tranny, I'd be willing to bet your neutral safty switch is fine.
