I have a 68 f100 360cid. Is there any reason to why it would rattle when acclerating after about 45mph. In 2nd it does it after 15mph. 188,000 miles on it. thanks
Would it maybe better be described as a knock instead of a rattle. I'm betting your bearings aren't in the best shape with all those miles. Before I rebuilt my motor my 360 was knocking so bad I was starting to get scared.
CRJ,
Give me some more details. How is it "rattling"? Does it shake the whole truck? Or is it just a noise? Does it idle OK? If so, it could be your harmonic balancer. Inspect the balancer by removing the crank pulley and look for rubber sticking out of the balancer. This is an unusual failure and is usually cause by a bad mechanic. That is, have you had a timing chain installed lately? If the balancer is pulled incorrectly it can be damaged beyond repair. What ever your problem, it's in the motor.
Good Luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher
Could also be detonation, don't really know from your description. If you think it might be, either try a tank of 92 octane or retard the timing a bit. Hope this is it, rod knock is tantamount to coughing up blood.
