I am working on a 1983 F-150 with a 4.9L and 4speed. Vehicle would not start and was popping through carb, like timing was out. I advanced the dist and got truck to run. Checked timing with a timing lite and had 20 deg BTDC to get it to run. I tried to return timing to spec and vehicle would die. Ok here's my question, Im I missing something?
1. pulled timing cover, has steel gears and they are lined up
2. Pulled dist, roll pin in gear is fine. advance system seems fine.
3. Has Duraspark, tried another ign module with same results
Thanks Phil
What timing marks are you using? The gear cover has marks casted in the cover and are the wrong marks. There is another (should be) on the left side of the balancer if you look over the radiator.
Another idea, is the dizzy in correct? Place #1 at TDC and see if the rotor lines up for #1.
Yes I am using the marks on the left side, I lined up to TDC before I pulled the timing cover and gear was lined up correctly also. The distributor has not been changed. Nothing has been done to this truck it just stopped running.
Had already tried an ignition module but it just didn't make sense, so I got a 3rd module and truck runs fine. Module can retard timing and mine was screwing with me.
