I have a F150 supercab, short bed, I6, E4OD, 3.55s, 31x10.5
I have a lot of vibration at all speeds while accelerating.
I am thinking Torque converter shudder or bad U joints.
I am going to replace the U joints and the bearing between
the two part drive shaft.
If this doesnt fix it How do I confirm it is the torque converter?
I have access to a floor jack with a tranny adaptor, How hard is it
to replace aTorque converter in you drive way?
I pull a 5000 lb trailer every couple months. Are there any shift kits or
mods I should consider while the tranny is out?
I can replace the rear main engine seal while the tranny is out, right?
You can replace the rear seal with the tranny out and would be a good idea. I don't think your torque converter would shudder under acceleration except if you push on the gas and lug the engine in high gear. Sounds more like the ujoints to me.
Gotta admire your ambition. Keep it simple - at least at first. I concur that you should probably sort out any driveshaft / U joint issues first. If you still have a shudder problem then I would suggest that you try a simple tranny filter and fluid change before you go as far as dropping the entire tranny - unless that is really where you want to go ie: to get at the rear seal and stuff. You should probably try a search with the string "transmission shudder" in order to give yourself a really good background knowledge on this subject. There are TONS of posts that will give you the FMD on the cause and various fixes to the problem.
