I trying to increase the gas mileage of My 79 f-250 460 4 speed. It is getting between 6 and 7 mpg right now. I have some ideas, but I am open to suggestions.
Big Blue is right!
You couldn't have a bigger gas hog! But you couldn't have a more definitive truck either!
Change your diff gears. I'd recommend going to 3.00:1 With a 460, your gonna get away with it. You won't loose the bottom end if you have a granny which I'm pretty sure you do.
Good luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-01 AT 10:12 PM (EST)]What elevation are you guys getting that poor of mileage out of a big block?
With My 429 CJ,
I drive at about 3400 Ft above sea level most of the time.
Our Imperial gallon is only 20% larger than your U.S. gallon and I get 18 MPG / 55-60 MPH SOLO
and about 13-16 MPG when I pull my 4000 lb holiday trailer.
Of course, there is always an EGG underneath my gas pedal when I drive though.
I;d say go with the basics.
Get a good quality tune up for carb, ignition etc.
And make sure there is as little driveline resistance as possible:
-air up the tires
-grease wheel brearings (yes it's true I've heard of gas milage being doubled by greasing wheel bearings)
Then after those are checked I would go with aftermarket things like exhaust/intake (The better you can move air in and out of an engine increases its effeciency.
