Wondered if I could get some advice. Ever since I got a replacement IP put on my truck, it starts great and does not leak. BUT, I dont have near the same power that I had before, and the engine is really loud, even going down the road at 55mph (2000 rpm) with no load, empty box, no trailer. I get a loud diesel clap type noise, so loud that my stock radio is turned up halfway and you cant hear it. ( I am not a loud radio person, but I cant even tell its on). At an idle, I can hear the radio fine. If I mash the pedal, under acceleration, the motor makes a quieter noise, briefly, then goes back to the loud diesel clatter, even under acceleration. I watched my mirrors this morning, under a pedal mash, I was leaving some black smoke during acceleration. I dont remember this doing that with the old pump. I am most worried about the loud clatter. Even with 40-60 lbs oil pressure.
Did they disturb the gear housing when they replaced the pump? Sounds like the timing's too far advanced. You could try to back it off some and see if it sounds more normal. Loosen the three nuts and rotate the top back towards the driver's side (maybe 1/16"). It is possible to have the gear totally out of line and it will still run, badly.
look at the mounting flange and the pump mount ... there are marks that should be very close to each other. they are located at the top driver side of the mounting flange. the width of the marks is quite a bit of timing change... if i remember right, if both marks are separated by the width of each mark, you are looking at 7 degrees. the top of the pump to the pass side is advanced and the top of the pump to the driver side is retarded.
I changed mine about 6 months ago and had the same problem... Too far advanced... there's a timing (reference) mark on top of the pumps flange that bolts to the gear cover.. these marks are stamp in after the pump is timed, so that pump for that gear cover... But if you replace the pump you'll have to get it retimed... Also since your replacing the pump you might want to get your injectors done (rebuilt or a new set of 8)... Just that if they haven't been replaced, the pump is only as good as the injectors... And they're easy to put in...
I had mine too far advanced untill 2 days ago . I backed mine off about 1/16 and now she's a whole different animal .I should have tried it sooner , I ran it too advanced for over a month and didn't know what I was missing .
