Major differenetial problems

Didn't find exactly what i was looking for in the search, so i better explain what happened.

The center locking bar/pin thats in the rear differential shot through the derby cover of my differential!!!!
It did'nt shoot though, it actually just poped through forcefully without a sound, which is odd. anyways.

i think what happened is, the c clip that holds the axle into the rear end came off. The truck made the same noise when the axle came out on the way home as it did a while ago, which i assumed was the vibration in the front drive shaft, cause it always did it when the wheels were locked in.

This leeds me to belive the pin sheered off long ago, but the axle never came out for some reason.

Well, no problms on the trip to where i was going till I went to move my truck, i put it in gear, let the clutch out, and it felt like it poped outa gear gently.
The people standing outside the truck didn't hear any breaking sounds or anything of the sort when it happened.

i'm guessing that the axle shifted just right when i backed into this driveway enough to let that pin slide, cause the bolt in there must have sheered, the one that goes in the one end of the pin, it slid to the appropriate position, and then when i put it in 1st, and let the clutch out, the gears just pushed it through the rear cover.
I belive its the 8.8, but can't look cause the truck is over at the farm.

I figured i'd be okay in just front wheel drive on the way home. and started on my way. No problems for about 2 miles till the axle came right out on the drivers side!!!!!

Dosn't appear to be any bend in the axle, nor damage to the spline that i could tell at the time.

So what do i do?

I know nothing about differentials, I know there fairly simple, but my dad has my haynes manual! and i gotta get this fixed before friday if i can.

I am going to open up the rear end tommarow and see if the gears are broke.

If the gears are not broke, i should be able to just replace the appropriate parts shoudln't i?
And well, fix the drumn where it ground on the ground for a bit, only about 15 feet it seems. but thats still enough to do damage.

if there is a gear breakage in there, what should i do!??!?!?
i dont have 600 dollars for a new differential, or rack and pinion, or whatever goes back there.
I've never had to tear one appart.
I'm going to try and find a diagram after i'm finished with this, and shall drive to get my axle and gear ratio info tommarow morning and take some pictuers of the damage with the camera phone to help out.

I also need to know the gear old weight i need, and how much to fill this back up.

I should be able to get the new cover at the junk yard, but I need to know what else to make sure i replace, or check on when i get in there.

Oh yes, most important info, cause it dosn't add sigs in anymore.
i have a 95, f150, short box 4wd, m5od tranny with a 302.
32 inch bfg at's.
no lift, but 3/4 ton overload springs in the back also.

i need to atleast get this rear end together, so i can drive with front wheel drive for a day or too.
SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!

First, I've never heard of anyone driving around in front wheel drive for very long and not break anything. You also have parts floating around in the rear end which is NOT good at all. Don't drive it this way.

It sounds like your diagnosis is right. You're going to have to replace the pin and the c-clip at a minimum. If you're lucky, it hasn't caused any more damage. If the c-clip is still in place, that means you've broken the axle shaft.

Get it taken care of ASAP!! If the brakes pulsate after that, you're going to need a new drum on that side too.

the pin that came out is something u need to remove in order to remove the axle. when it is out the axle will push in and u can remove the locking clip on the end of the axle. that is why your axle came out u need that pin in to keep it together. the pin that came out is kept in place by a small bolt. sometimes they wear out and break. you may need to replace this pin cause it can be very hard to get the broken bolt out. if you have a locking clip for the axle ant a pin to put in place u should be alright. from what ive seen these rear ends ar pretty tough.(built ford tough). to fill it up use 80/90 gear oil. at the front side of the rearend youl see the filler plug, fill it up to this hole. please do yourself a favor and dont drive it like a front wheel drive, its hard on the transfer case and what ever is laying around in the rear end. its an easy job to do.

well, i gotta get a new rear end though none of the parts inside are broke.

when the axle came out, it damaged the axle houseing bending it pretty bad.

The front wheel drive thing isn't something you want to do, but if your rear end goes out, it is a way home.

unfounatly, that c clip came out too before or after, and the axle came out. i woulda been fine otherwise.

I think my bearings have been gone for a while too, unsure.

I got some pictures, will post later.
and update on the axle swap which we will do tommarow
250 for junkyard.

if there are any gear problems in the differential, i have a good set still.
none of them got chiped or broke, just gotta pull it apart.
355 gears i found out, but what does the otehr stuff on the tag mean?
88 for 8.8 and 3L55 for 355 gears, but whats the other stuff?

hope i dont have to replace any drums, but it looks like the pads are a little wore out.

btw, how do i get more slack from my parking break lines, they were takeng apart so they woudlnt' rust shut, but i need them a lot, when I get in and out to open gates and what not. how can i get some more slack to hook the cables up? i'm about 2 inches short...! aaah!

Thanks for the help of where to fill it to guys, but i already know that.
I just dont want to have to run back to the store to buy another thing of gear oil. which i will replace in the used one.
2 or 3 bottles? whats up?
i dont have a manual for the truck, and the door tag is gone. (pulls hair out)

i magine it might be the same as my 91?

The 'L' means Limited Slip. One thing you need to check whether you have a VSS in the axle or not. You need at least 3 bottles of gear oil, and if you get another LS axle, you need friction modifier, too. The last axle I bought came with pretty good brakes, so other than bleeding, I didn't have to do anything with that.
