I'm a private SEL, and my last instructor looked at all the signatures in my log book and said "You dont care who you fly with do you?"
CaptChas and I are on another forum where we recently discussed this flying thing.
Oh how I wish I could have the use of some of these "Tie down Queens".
You young guys should go for the IFR at least, if not the CFI. The one thing I learned while helping another guy get his IFR was "when not to fly" and thats far more important than how to fly.
Private, Instrument rating, hi-perf and complex endorsements. Got all the commercial training out of the way including the written. Just need to make time for the checkride.
Got a 2000 Piper Archer III that I cruise around in every now and then. Dual GPS, autopilot, leather seats and air conditioning. A really sweet ride. Just toured the eastern U.S. in it in October. KBVY-KMRB-KTYS-KMEI-KTIP-1G5-KGFL-KBVY. Almost the entire trip was in IMC or VMC on top. Great way to travel, even with AVGAS at $4+ per gallon.
That's why you use this avgas prices site to avoid the $4 a gallon avgas- BTW you probably already know that.
I agree that getting the IFR rating is the way to go. However when I figure it's going to cost me $6-9K to do and then stay current. I can't do it. My flying all has to be paid for by me. It is only rarely that I am able to fly for my job.
When I signed out of the Navy, I walked away from the pilot's seat. Haven't looked back. I flew big ugly C-130's. Cetainly didn't want to spend the next half of my life flying for a commerical airline.
Whowe, Lyndon Air Transfer, Lyndon Washington, Fly C-130's (its a little different than a C-130) cargo only. No passnegers. Give em' a look. It's different than a Commercial Airline.
I think I'd understand your attitude though. I like VFR flying. I dont think I'd like flying by the numbers, when I didn't want to fly, and all the times when its not gonna be fun.
That's why I stopped at SE.L, VFR. That can be exciting enough.
In doing some IFR practice with a buddy, I learned 'when not to fly' !
Thats great to know boys, lol i know it hurts paying for the gas though. It sucks to spend a few hundred dollars just to get a little smile out of your girlfriend after taking her for a ride in a plane, that she doesnt know costs more then a new bentley to buy!! lol
Hey whooboy.
I was a crewchief on the F4E at SJAFB, What a fighter. I am in a group that is made up of Phantom phixers, former pilots and folks who have a special place for the Double ugly, bent wing bug sucker. Love to hear some stories of back in the days.
I just found out not to long ago the F4 i was assigned to, was used as a drone in target practice. I just happened to find one last known picture so far of her being converted to remote control.
When your out of Phantoms, your out of fighters.
In the process of getting my private. 16, Junior in HS. Working gently towards checkride on my bday, hoping for that airline job.
I hate to tell you this....The way the airline industry heading, there won't be jobs left. At least none that pay. Fly for recreation, I'll support that 100 percent, but go to school get an engineering degree, anything. Commercial aviation just isn't what it used to be. Good Luck
I've taken a ground school course but don't have any logged time in aircraft. Flew right seat in a King Air a couple of times and have many hours in our 757 simulators at work.
whooboy
which fighters, 14 -18's. and how long 20 or 30 years , from your saying 5000 hours you sure did this country a lot of hard earned service, i personally say thank you for all those years , SIR!
you, SIR! will find a lot of us in here were lowly noncoms. but just as proud of our service to the U.S.A. a lot of us also retired with that great feeling. weather it was full service or reserve we did our time with super great pride.
as to your son he has one heck of a boss with connie kalitta o-boy there is a lot of drag racer history there in that man
The "Connie" I've met over the years was a pilot intimidator. He treated his dog better than he did his pilots! (there will be people out there who know exactly what I mean) I think his son runs the company now. Back in the day, when a Kalitta DC-8 taxied up we'd all go running over. Those things were absolute junk and always broke! A healthy Captain's check at the end of the day. Ahhh the good old days. LOL
I also fly. I spot fish over the ocean. 11,000+ hours in a taildragger. 7000+ in a Citabria, 4000+ in C172M converted to a taildragger, 180hp, 95 gals of fuel. I love my job Work 3 to 4 months a year.
