front driveshaft question

Ok stupid question. On my 97 f150 4x4 (which is in the shop getting a new slave cylinder and clutch plate). I need to know is he front driveshaft supposed to slide back and forth on itself? looks like a small shaft iside a bigger one. The guy at the shop says its supposed to and says if he cant get it loose I need a new shaft Help!

Sometimes you can get the slip yoke off and clean up the splines so it moves back and forth like it's supposed to.
If that doesn't work you might be able to find a machine shop that does driveshaft work that can replace the splines and yoke for cheaper than a new shaft costs.
