Are Diesel Additives Really Working?

I have a 2005 F-250 6.0 PSD CC SWB since June of this year. Since September, I have been adding Power Service Diesel Kleen the grey bottle when it is warm and the white for the winter. I havn't noticed a change in mpg. The SWB has a 29 gallon tank, and I add approx. 16 oz of diesel additive after each fill up. I reset the tripometer and off I go burning fuel. When it is time to re-fuel, i check to see how much i have traveled (usually around 400 miles) when not hauling anything. I thought the mpg should increase to an average of 20-22 mpg. Also most of the time i am driving, it is on the highway about 65-70 miles/hr.

Has anyone had any better luck w/ diesel additive?

Thanks,

FordGuy

IMO, if you are using fuel additive for MPG gain you are using it for the wrong reason. A side benefit at best is what you should expect.

I use PowerService at every fuel up. Approx. .64 oz per gal.

Purpose? Injector cleansing. Enhanced lubricity properties. Water dispersant. Higher cetane boost for better and smoother start ups.

If you fill short changed in the MPG dept. Try Stanadyne or the Motorcraft brand (could possibly be the same)...but, use something.

I choose PowerService because I can find it just about anywhere.

These are the big reasons for using additive. You MAY pick up .5mpg. Maybe 1mpg if you're lucky. The milage increase (if any) is a side benefit. I saw about .5mpg increase when we were running #2. Winter fuel has cured that.

Ok, I too didn't notice a mpg improvement but, have now taked to 3 diesel mech.s not including the service manager at Ford and they all kind of laughed at me for wanting to use an additive every tank full...they all said once or twice a year with normal milage and the last guy; Larry went on a long disertation about why you dont need it every tank citing the chemicals, running pressures, common DF 2 composition etc., etc., I got lost but he convinced me.

I guess they think that all diesel is dry and of a high cetane rating. Well, your choice. I prefer to err on the side of caution.

Diesel tech told me to use Power Service grey once the weather gets real cold to prevent gelling. He said you don't want to deal with fuel gelling.

He said other then that you may want to to use Power Service white bottle every 4th or 5th tank to keep the injectors clean, but he knows many people that have NEVER used an addative and never had a problem with 7.3's and 6.0's

But I'd bet there are also many who have had issues from not using addatives.

It's the other way around...Grey bottle has little, if any, anti gel properties.

Well here in central CA I actually don't know anyone who uses it, my dad's 7.3 has about 80K and we just changed the fuel filters, he has a Racor seperator where you can see the water, has never had more than a few drops...we don't get the humidity you get in TX, but I was told last summer when I went back east to take some because water in the fuel is much more predominate the further you go east...'cause out here none of my friends who drive diesels, including two who have 6+ each for work use any additives.

I am gonna run it forever in my 2006. Runs so smooth and 10% better mileage during the break in stage, which will take 6 more months....

Whatever you use, make sure you put it in before you fill up to get the most benefit, not after.

It's kind of hard to believe that you are getting 10% better mpg. Do you care to elaborate?

14mpg, 10% = 1.4 mpg increase
18 mpg, 10% = 1.8

I don't believe it..............
