Will a freeze plug bottom out?

When driving a freeze plug into the block.....is there a "too far"? Will it push all the way through, or is there a point where it simply goes no further?

Depends on how the block is machined. I've seen both ways. Best bet is to check for a lip at the bottom of the hole before you tap in the new one.

I can't speak for my PSD but on all my old chevy gas motors they would NOT bottom out and would push all the way through into the water passages.

I've never seen one that in some way would not push through so you can turn it sideways to pull it out.

Wasn't actually installing a new one.....I was tapping the old one in to see how far down the radius the crack in my block extended.

I moved it in almost 1/8" and the crack is still going, so I stopped there and buried it in JB Weld.

Merry freakin Christmas to me

Had the heat lamp on it half the night tryng to get it to cure so I can drive it to work in the morning......that $20 a gallon coolant doesn't look all that good in a puddle under the truck.

Anybody have an opinion on welding a block???

I know a guy that can weld anything. I once saw him grab some air with his right hand, through it on a piece of cardboard and weld it all up with a wireless pixy dust electrode. Every time you would walk by it would make a sound like an albino, midget elephant trying to fart out its left ear.

Unhappy

cookie, Can I ask a dumb question? With $20 a gallon coolant, How did your block get cracked? I am not sure about the welding thing. I'm sure someone could effect a weld that would hold for a while, but you will always be having trouble from that thing and you will always worry about your mule coming up lame. Maybe somebody has a better idea.

Welding that big mass of metal takes some work. You have to heat the area around it so it stays hot while welding it. Otherwise, right after your done with the weld, the surrounding area will suck the heat very quickly and most likely will crack again. There's some excellent epoxy on the market for cracked blocks. I think we used a epoxy called Devcon, it was 24 years ago and my memory's not quite what it used to be (stupid beer). We used it to seal up a John Deere tractor that had a 9" x 9" U shaped section of block cracked and pushed out. Never leaked after we used the epoxy.

I have used a product called KW Blockseal with excellent success. you flush your cooling system to remove all anti freeze. then fill er back up with water and block seal. run until hot, drain and let sit overnite. ran this stuff in my mack truck for 4 years and not a drop has leaked. hope this helps.

Hey Cookie, so your saying that the crack is in the radius of the freeze plug hole? If that is the situation, can the hole be bored to accept a larger diameter plug, hopefully removing the cracked portion in the boring process. I dunno, just a thought, aloha.
