Could I have some of your opinions please. I have a '79 4X4 SWB frame that I just welded up all the holes on and smoothed. It's not a show car finish but looks good. Since this vehicle is used and abused in the summer and stored in the winter I was thinking how best to treat the frame. Powder Coating: A lot of work to smooth and build up any low areas for a perfect finish and then if I forget something I'm done. Plus building up the frame with a material to take the heat is a pain. Paint: I've searched the threads and there's everything from rattle can to POR 15 and its counterparts to two part paint systems. This has the upside of being able to smooth the frame easier (bodyfill). Line X: Talked to the local dealer and a smooth finish is available but may not give 100% smooth surface in areas due to the nature of the product and application. The textured finish is no problem and if I media blast the frame at the shop next door I can blast, prime and coat all in one day.
I'm leaning towards the Line X but would like to get some objective opinions. Thanks.
I will be snad blasting my Bronco frame, treating it with OSPHO and then it will get sparyed with DP epxoy primmer and then with a coat of single stage gloss black which will be the best PPG has to offer.
I am going with gloss black because it tends to clean up easier than Satin and even more so than flat black which tends to stain.
My vote goes for either POR 15 or Zero Rust on the frame. Both of these will give you a long lasting and VERY durable finish. POR 15 in particular can be beaten on with a hammer after it hardens and it will not chip. I'm sure it will be a lot cheaper than Line-X also. You cannot go wrong with POR 15 or Zero Rust.
