Ranger Stalling!

Back during the last year I had my 88 Ranger it developed this problem where from a cold start if it was below 20 outside half the time it wouldn't idle for more than 10 seconds without stalling. I didn't care much because i was getting rid of it. However, my 2.3l '93 Ranger just started this! I hadn't used it in a couple of days and its been sitting outside in 10-20 degrees. Once again, it won't stay idling for very long (this time it lasts about 30 seconds). As soon as it is warmed up it is fine. What doesen't make sense to me is 2 weeks ago it was quite a bit colder and it wasn't doing this at all. No check engine light, no other problem. Anyone have an idea of what this is? The main difference between this and by old Ranger is this one just dies without warning, where as the old one the idle speed would flucuate between 500 and 1200 rpms for awhile, and sometimes it would stabilize where others it would ended up dropping too low and stalling.

This isn't really a huge deal for me since 90% of the time I just take off from a cold start, but I just don't want this to cause other problems.

Will it start if you hold the gas down just slightly? IAC could be it, but I'd like to dig a little deeper first.

The problem is the truck doesn't give a warning. I have had IAC problems before on another vehicle and when the idle speed started to flucuate, tapping the gas or holding it down slightly would get it back to normal. Right now my truck is idling normal and then all of a sudden it stalls out. I had a spare IAC and i was going to throw it in and check it, but i can't find the spare. The fact that it is dying without any warning or flucuating is making me think it is not the IAC, but i could be wrong. Is there a way to test the IAC?

The Haynes manual gives a procedure to check it with a voltmeter, but I'm not sure whether or not it will check for sticking or just electrical failure.

It won't check for sticking. Really you outta just pull and clean it, it won't hurt and that's the only real mechanical failure it's prone to, getting dirty.
I'd say pull your entire throttle body and clean it. How's the fuel filter anyways, could cause this problem, not the sudden drop but check it nonetheless.

Yeah I guess that is my best bet for now is cleaning the IAC and checking the fuel filter. Hopefully i'll get lucky and that will take care of it. i'll do that today.
