We've got our '56 Panel truck off the frame and getting ready for paint. We are keeping with sea mist green, but using Emron. The frame will also be Emron, a flat black.
Question is about undercoating. We want to protect the truck but would really like to paint over any undercoating protction. Been thinking about something like rhino-lining.
If you have the bucks and can roll the chassis to a shop, the spray-on lining is pretty nice. For the rest of us, Herculiner is works really well. It can be rolled or brushed on. It isn't as thick a coating as the spray-on types, but is very tough and waterproof. I used it on my bed and will use it under running boards and fenders. You can paint over it if you want.
I also used Herculiner on my running boards, cab floor bottom, Firewall, and under hood. Only problem is it seems to be fading on the running boards from the sunlight. I see JC Whitney carries a topcoating for the Herculiner they sell. You can see pictures in my gallery.
hey guys, why not powder coat it, down here it's as cheap as paint, provided u r sandblasting anyway, a little bit more work having to transport the frame but the end result on a driver is worth while.

You could use "chip guard" paint, the lightly textured paint you see on the lower parts or behind the wheel wells of some new cars. As the name indicates it's highly chip resistant and can be made up in or painted over any color. If painting it yourself with Imron, be sure you have the proper mask and filters, the paint uses moisture out of the air to cure, and will harden in your lungs. If you breathe the fumes there is nothing anyone can do but watch you die! Imron is pretty chip resistant all by itself.

Had my frame powder coated. Am completely satisfied and it will never rust. Cost a bit but worth it. The only undercoat I used was a spray bomb on the inside of all 4 fenders.
I know several of my buddies in here recommend herculiner, but I used Duplicolor bedcoating from WalMart. It's about half the price, but it's not as rough as herculiner but still give the protection. I haven't used it as a undercoating, however my best friend has a show car (has several trophies with it) who used the Duplicolor to undercoat the interior, inside door panels, wheelwells, etc. I know he used a air gun to spray it, but he said it would of been just as easy to roll it on with the kit. The application was real easy to do on my bed. It states you can paint over it also.
A lot of times undercoatings just trap the dirt and moisture in the rust-prone areas. If you are doing a panel-off paint job and are confident you are getting a good solid primer/basecoat/topcoat paint job on it, and you aren't driving it thru all kinds of muck, you might be just as well leaving it in paint and carefully washing it off a couple times a year. I'm going to caulk a lot of reinforcing plates and panels (doublers) with seam sealer to keep water out.
If it ever does start to rust again, getting the undercoating off can be a real bear!
I used POR-15 on my frame, then primered it and painted it. I have read both good and bad things about POR-15( usually that is fades with exposure to sunlight). But I fugure what the heck it was a bit costly(about $110 per gallon) but it goes along way. I was thinking about using it to coat the underside of my cab and inner fenders then painting over it. I live in Arizona and dont plan on using it as a daily driver,so I'm not real concerned out the thing rusting. Anyone have comments about POR-15?

I had my frame sandblasted, then I put on a heavy coat of epoxy primer, and then I painted over that with chassis black paint. It hasn't seen alot of miles yet, but it did see a few years worth of wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, grinders and anything else you can think of....being dropped on it. I can say that it has held up very well. I think the rough sand blasted surface provided a very good grip for the epoxy to adhere too. That epoxy primer is tough stuff.
My painter has years of experience with Imron and has all the equipment. We are going to investigate the products mentioned and then decide what will be best for us.
We are at that point in the project where everything is apart. The doors, brackets, and most of the small pieces are already painted and packed away waiting for the body and frame. We can't wait to start putting it back together!

Matt,
I used POR 15 on the inside door hem flanges and inside the cab on the bottom corners front and rear that normally rust through. Was going to do the frame but went with the powder coat instead.
