2003 F350 CRew cab dually with 5 codes displayed after return from dealer.
My Dad got his truck back about 2 weeks ago from the dealer after they pulled the cab off of the frame to change head gaskets. This morning he tried to start it and held the starter for like 10 seconds at a time and after the 3rd try it fired up and bellowed smoke everywhere. It sounded to me like it was flooded but he said that He wasn't giving it any throttle so I decided to pull any codes I could find with our scanner and this is what I got.
P0403-- Exhaust gas recirculatrion control
P0404--Exhaust gas recirculation control circuit range/performance
P0405--Exhaust gas recirculation sensor A circuit low
P0683--Glow plug control module to PCM communication circuit
P1000--OBD systems readiness test not complete
I don't know have of what all of this means but all I know is that he went out to start his truck the same as any other day except this all happened. Once he got it running he did what ever errans that he had to do and got back home fine. He just knew that something wasn't right for it to do what it did so he asked me to pull any codes that I could find.
Please help thanks.

P.S.
I haven't posted in a while because for some reason the settings on the board and the settings on my computer didn't work together until I had another security update done on my computer so this is the first time that I have been able to post in about 6 months.

P1000 should be normal if the battery clamps have just been reconnected and the computer reset or a new flash installed.
I'd guess it was hard starting and blew smoke because of no glow plugs from the P0683 code. If the PCM can't talk to the GPCM, you likely won't get glow plugs, thus no heat, thus a hard crank (not great on the engine).
P0403/0404/0405 sounds like a failing EGR valve.
I wonder if they forgot to plug a few things back in after they dropped the body back on the frame?

When I was looking thru the reciepts that we got back from the dealer after the head job I noticed that they replaced the egr valve because my dad told them that the turbo whould cut in and out as we would be cruising on the highway and if we were just sitting at a light it would cut on and off. As far as the p1000 goes I figured that they would erase any codes that they may have caused before it left the shop. To bad it doesn't let you know when it started liked how many starts ago. I work at a Nissan dealership and the computer that we use will tell you how many starts a vehicle has performed since the code popped up.

Yep, you'd think. Regardless, I think I'd be scheduling a return trip... let them fix all of it under warranty so it's all appropriately documented in case you continue having problems. I'd try not to crank it too much without glow plugs (not nice to the engine)... I suppose if you have the block heater you could use it to add a bit of warmth to the situation and mitigate some of the hard starting.
